Michelle’s final week at Kingwood

After twelve years of providing support and management at Autism at Kingwood, Michelle leaves us this week to take a senior role with another organisation.

Michelle joined us when she was 21 years old, having worked with older people, and in education for people with learning disabilities. Starting out as part of our Bank team, she provided one-to-one support for John, who was transitioning from a residential young adult setting to Kingwood. Michelle was soon asked to join what was then the Transition Service in Reading, on a full-time basis. Over time, she became the Support Team Coordinator, and when the opportunity arose in 2018, Michelle was successful in becoming the Transition Manager.

She says:
“Due to the nature of the Transition Service, the challenges, and the rewards of supporting people through such a difficult time in their life, I found the role fascinating and left my job at the local college to come to Kingwood. The more I worked at the service, the more I wanted to learn.
I am grateful to Kingwood for giving me opportunities to develop my skills and training. I became the Intensive Interaction Co-ordinator for Kingwood, a PBS coach, a PROACT SCIPr Trainer, a PLAN coordinator (to facilitate Good Life Planning) and became the STOMP (Stop The Over Medication of People with learning disabilities and autism) lead for the organisation.
Being able to give people a chance to achieve their goals in a way that suits them and helping them to access their community, means so much to me. It’s so rewarding seeing people achieve the smallest goals, right through to watching the progress that takes years. Seeing how far someone has come, and how much they have achieved, when they weren’t getting the right chances before – that’s the reason I do my job.
I am grateful for the team I have, which has been crucial for the success of the Transition Service. We’ve dealt with real challenges but have got through them as a team.”

Thank you Michelle, for your hard work and dedication to Kingwood.  We wish you lots of luck in your new job.
