The Kingwood Autism Approach: Specialist Autism Training

We want our staff to feel confident in the important work they do. Some colleagues won’t have had prior experience of working in social care or with autistic people, and so we provide autism specialist training that will provide the best care for the people we support.

In addition to comprehensive mandatory training, our staff receive training in The Kingwood Autism Approach. This is based on five autism best-practice models, used together to support the physical, social and emotional well-being needs of the autistic people we support. Our staff equip themselves with a ‘toolkit’ of skills which enable the people they support to have a meaningful and good-quality of life.

The Kingwood Autism Approach places each autistic person at the centre of their support programme, and a personalised approach is formed around them.

Autism Level 1: Understanding Autism

A full day training provides an in-depth introduction to autism, including causation, and explores the differences in autistic people’s communication, social interaction, imagination, thinking style, interests, behaviour and sensory experiences. There is also a focus on the strengths and value of autism. The second half of the day focusses on how staff can support the person by adapting their communication and making the environment autism friendly. It encourages staff to consider their role in supporting autistic people compassionately and provides a brief introduction to trauma informed care.

Autism Level 2: Mental Health, Wellbeing and Sexuality in Autism

A full day training with the first part focussing on mental health and well-being. The training begins with encouraging staff to think about the relevance of this for themselves as well as the people they support. The training goes on to look at the symptoms of mental health conditions in autistic people, and why autism increases the chance of having poor mental health. Throughout the day we think about how to spot mental distress in the people we support and how we can respond to distress and offer strategies that may help. Strengths based approaches are discussed including promoting resilience. The second part of the training turns to gender and sexuality in autism. We talk about what is (or should be) the same for everyone, regardless of autism or learning disability and our role in supporting people.
