The Kingwood 'Let's Grow' project

Garden update - July to October 2011

It was a very busy summer for the Garden Project as the crops that were sown earlier in the year grew and grew and the polytunnel turned into a wild jungle of humidity and very large plants of all varieties.

We have had a very productive year growing a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers. Participants saw our cucumbers rapidly outgrowing their raised bed, our tomatoes plants reach for the roof, our marrows and squash grew to be enormous specimens, our potatoes and beans were delicious and our salad is still growing strong. We also grew some wonderful annual flowers and perennials.

This is our second summer at the polytunnel and we really have settled into growing our own fresh vegetables and have greatly enjoyed taking the food home to eat.

Our small enclosed garden at the side of the polytunnel has been of great benefit this summer as we have enjoyed sitting in the sunshine and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere of the garden and the quiet of the countryside. So much so, that our autumn project is to make a new sensory and wildlife garden on our site. We have already leveled the land, added lots of compost and have reached the final stage of putting in our plants and shrubs, including erecting the surrounding fence. This will give us another area where people can socialise or simply sit to enjoy the sounds, sights and smells of our garden.

The inside of the polytunnel is also undergoing change, as thanks to the kind donation of scaffolding planks from a local firm, Didcot Plant Hire, and compost from Agrivert in Benson, we are now creating further raised beds. Since the start of October we have been rapidly filling the beds with compost and sowing our wintering crops such as onions, broad beans and quick growing winter salad and herbs. We are also sowing perennial flowers to plant out in our new garden next spring. The Let’s Grow project has, and continues to give many hours of enjoyment and contentment to all the people who attend the project. In the spring of 2012 we will see even further expansion as we will start looking after two goats. Now that should prove fun!!
