What have we been doing?
Hello, I'm Bob Horwood and I would like to welcome you to Our Activities page.
Every quarter we will provide you with a short update on recent projects or activities.
Within this page it's our aim to cover something that's of interest to everyone, so if you have news about an activity you think the people we support may like to hear about please let us know.

Kingwood Horticulture Project
We have had a very productive year growing a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers. This is our third summer at the polytunnel and we really have settled into growing our own fresh vegetables and have greatly enjoyed taking the food home to eat.

Kingwood Dogs for the Disabled Project
Kingwood first started working with Dogs for the Disabled in the summer of 2010 when the charity approached Kingwood to propose a joint venture. Kingwood was keen to be involved in this pioneering work and a number of meetings were held to develop the pilot project.
Dogs for the Disabled is a charity that works with dogs to assist those with physical disabilities and families who have a child affected by autism. It is for this latter reason that Kingwood was interested in exploring the potential benefits the project may bring to the people we support.

Kingwood ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) Project
ASDAN is an awarding body which offers a wide programme of courses and qualifications which enable students with different abilities to learn skills for employment and life. In May 2011 Kingwood became a registered ASDAN Centre when Wallingford based Sally-Anne Preece and Hazel Hand attended "Towards Independence" workshops to enable them to run courses for the individuals we support.

Tuesday Club is an new evening event for the people we support to come along and spend time together in a relaxed environment, try out some new activities, have a drink and a snack, have fun and dance to some music.
Tuesday Club takes place every fortnight at the Portcullis Club in Wallingford between 7pm and 9pm.
Kingwood Lets Grow Jubilee Party
Not to miss out, the guys at the garden project decided to throw their very own Jubilee garden party in celebration of the Queen's big 60!
There was lots of cakes, snacks and drinks to be consumed and all the guest basked in the glorious sun and enjoyed the garden in full bloom.
Kingwood Ice Skating trip
A day after the Christmas Party, a group of people we support went ice skating in Oxford, which also represented our activities co-ordinator, Dominique Fisher's last day.
The event went down a storm and saw many people brave the cold and ice to go skating for the very first time. Derryn was a wiz on the ice and Kevin wouldn't give up as he learnt how to skate. A special mention should also be made to Tosha, Kayleigh and Paul who were really brave and got into the sleds.
Many staff also gave it a go, many ending up on their backs! There were also a few surprises with Hazel Hand showing us all how it's done; we may be seeing her at the Olympics next year! This is also a good opportunity to wish Dominique all the best for the future and to thank her for all her hard work.
Kingwood Christmas Party
Wednesday 14th of December saw the Kingwood Christmas party for staff, people we support and families. The event was held at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford and was a roaring success.
Whilst many off the families were taking part in an opportunity to provide feedback to the Senior Management Team, the people we support and some staff members kicked off the disco and karaoke. Later we all joined up and tucked into a yummy buffet of Christmas treats before encouraging those in the meeting to join the party.
A great time was had by all and I am pleased to announce the winner of the Kingwood Christmas poster competition was Lucy. A special shout out should be made to all those who sang a song. Well done and happy Christmas.
Mother Goose at the Oxford Playhouse
On the 5th December a group of supported individuals, along with members of Kingwood staff, attended a matinee performance of Mother Goose at the Oxford Playhouse, thanks to the generosity of the theatre which kindly donated 22 tickets for our use.
Everyone had a great time. Lee particularly liked the Wicked Witch of Walberswick, hissing and booing in all the right places whilst Tosha said his favourite bit was "all of it" and he especially loved the singing with Silly Billy. Sarah was quick to let staff know that Mother Goose was a man, whereas Paul clapped along with the music, laughing at Silly Billy and at the strange noises made by the Goose when laying the golden eggs.
An excellent afternoon was enjoyed by all and a special thank you goes to the staff at the Playhouse for making us so welcome and for whom nothing was too much trouble.
Other Kingwood activities
There are many activities organised by Kingwood on a weekly basis. Here's an example of how we communicate what's going on.
Give it a Go
Kingwood supports 'Give It A Go' an on-line guide to sports, activities, clubs and hobbies across Oxfordshire and for people living in the surrounding areas. This site aims to inspire people of all ages to try something new, and is available in an accessible format for ease of use for individuals with a physical or learning disability. 'Give It A Go' provides details of a wide range of activities which welcome, and are suitable for, individuals with any disability. Click here to find out more.
Kingwood also works in partnership with many other organisations across the region to provide a range of support and leisure services. Please see our links page for more details.
Staff encourage me to do things for myself and to live more independently...
